Voice Dictation for Claude Code on Windows

Choose a coding task you can explain but would postpone writing because it needs too much context. Put the cursor in Claude Code, press your PrivateTranscribe hotkey, and dictate the bug, expected behavior, relevant files, constraints, and verification steps in one recording. Aim for 600 words, then check the word count before submitting it.

The claim is observable: the first draft should appear in the Claude Code prompt without you typing it. Review the pasted text, correct names or code tokens, and only then send it to the agent. This tests the whole voice-to-terminal workflow instead of relying on a promise that dictation is fast.

Install PrivateTranscribe Starter, choose a local Whisper model, and set a global hotkey. Place the cursor in the Claude Code prompt, press the hotkey, speak, and finish the recording. PrivateTranscribe transcribes the audio and pastes the completed text into the active terminal.

Start with tap-to-talk for long prompts so you do not need to hold keys while explaining the task. Use push-to-talk for short corrections or follow-up instructions. Test the hotkey in your actual terminal before relying on it during a coding session.

Start with the outcome you want. Then describe what you observed, which part of the project is involved, what must not change, and how Claude Code should verify the result. Natural speech is fine. The important part is giving enough concrete context to act safely.

For example, explain that a mobile card clips its final label, name the page where it appears, ask for a responsive fix rather than smaller unreadable text, and require a mobile-width test plus a production build.

Dictation is useful for intent, observations, constraints, and acceptance criteria. It is less reliable for exact file paths, shell commands, case-sensitive identifiers, punctuation-heavy code, and secrets. Type or paste those details, and inspect every command before an agent runs it.

A long spoken prompt is not automatically a good prompt. Remove repetition after transcription, keep the desired outcome near the start, and make the verification requirement explicit. Voice should make complete context easier to capture, not reward unnecessary length.

With local Whisper selected, PrivateTranscribe processes the recording on your Windows PC. The raw audio does not need to be uploaded to a transcription provider.

The resulting text is still sent to Claude when you submit the prompt in Claude Code. Local dictation protects the transcription step; it does not change the privacy policy of the coding agent receiving the final text. Avoid dictating secrets that should not enter the prompt.
